Firstly, Miss Kayleigh found out that she was accepted for a master's program in London! in England! For the past 8 months or so, she's been sending me the funniest facebook messages and emails, and i hate to say that i laughed at her always-imminent nervous breakdowns and she tried to maintain a high GPA to remain in competition for candidacy, but it's true. Her messages would be 8 full pages, complete stream of consciousness with virtually no punctuation or any consideration for the reader.
Have you ever read Trainspotting? where the entire book is written phonetically and you need to sort of speak it out loud in order to understand what you're reading? that is exactly how i survived this year with Kayleigh. it would always make me laugh because it was exactly like how she speaks when she's excited. like, big breathhhhhhh andtenfullminutesofspeakingwithoutbreaks, stops, orseparatedwords, then repeat. And it all paid off! She's moving in a few weeks, and i couldn't be happier for her!
anyway, i made a pair of these for andy's mom for christmas and wanted to tackle the Bird in Hand pattern just once more. maybe i'm secretly wanting to make some for myself (hint, julia) so i keep finding this pattern alluring and inspiring. They're called Bird in Hand because they have a little bird pattern at the thumbtip, so when you hold your palm up, you've got a little bud in your hand.
The second present was sent to Amanda for a HUGE accomplishment and for being an all-around nice lady! This weekend, Amanda, a marathoner, attempted (and half finished!) the Canadian Death Race. It's not called a death race for a reason, lovelies. From the website:
You must truly have the curiosity of a cat, the constitution of an ox, and the spirit of adventure, although your friends and loved ones may have a completely different description of our mental health. Consider running for 125km over rough, mountain trails, through pristine forests shared with resident wildlife, over ragged, rocky, and sometimes wet or snow-covered, seemingly endless terrain. Sounds pretty tough? Well, add the fact that you are journeying over three different mountain summits and are gaining over 17,000 feet in elevation, crossing over a major river by raft, (At our spectacular Hell's Gates canyon at the confluence of the Smoky and Sulphur Rivers.) plus running part of this race in the dark and there you have it - the makings of our larger-than-life world-class event, the Canadian Death Race!
wow.
From what i hear, it takes about three attempts to finish, as it's so grueling and taxing. i just checked her posted results and the woman ran for eight and a half hours. conveniently, i spent eight and a half hours watching special victims unit making this Hugs and Kisses scarf. Fair trade-off, right?
I'm so proud of you, Amanda!!!!
