christmas presents, pt 3

hands down, my absolute favorite thing my mother ever made (very weird using past tense, even now... wow...) were her mexican wedding cookies. they're similar to shortbread and are very buttery, nutty, and always have a generous amount of icing sugar sieved on top, making them look like little crescent moon-shaped mountains. no memory transports me more quickly to decembers before i left home, especially in later years when she finally smartened up and made an extra batch for me as she hammered out the christmas baking.
the trick is that they're not too sweet, they mainly taste of butter and nuts, they literally melt in your mouth if given the opportunity, and you can go through at least two dozen before getting too sugarbuzzed. at least two dozen.

i should be able to show you what they look like so we can both have mouths watering, but i found this recipe the day after i tried making them using internet recipes, and none of them turned out AT ALL. very cute: thumbing through her nearly-broken-spined small recipe book it was one of the first, and under the title said, "julia's favourite".
