Encounters at the End of the Earth
it's really good. it's a new movie by werner herzog and it's a documentary about Antarctica. and it's really good. he narrates it (i guess he does so for all of his movies? i don't know.) and he is so patient and interested and poetic, but just sort of gently presents you with images or interviews and allows your own introspection to take over. the footage is stunning, and it's just scene after scene of beautiful things. the thing that i liked the most about the movie was the theme of contrast. above water and below, the idea of being at the end of the world visually, but the narration suggests a link to the small spaces within oneself, and the desolation of the place that is inhabited by people who seem to really, truly want to be there.
he dedicated the movie to roger ebert, and if you're still unconvinced, read ebert's letter in response to the gesture.
